My First Live Bright Eyes Experience
Sarah teased me on numerous occasions that I'd eventually meet Conor Oberst. I never really thought it would happen. I am far too shy to ever approach someone as talented as him. What do you say to someone who has touched your life in so many ways that you've never met before without coming accross as a total obessive freak?
Before the concert started, I went to the washroom. I had finished going about my business...when the door opened. I looked up. Staring right in front of me was ....CONOR FUCKING OBERST! I was in complete shock. He was in shock as well. I'd like to think it had something to do with my good looks and stylish ensemble, but I think it more had to do with the fact that he was in a female washroom. He apologized a billion times for being there. He asked me if I knew where the male washroom was. My shock hadn't worn off so I stood there like a mute moron and said nothing. He waited a while for my response and then left. It was the greatest and stupidest moment of my life ever. Guys walking in on me in awkward situations has happened to me soooooo many times before. It is only natural, I guess, that it happened with Conor as well.
The concert was amazing. Like I knew it would be. It wasn't even getting to see Bright Eyes play that made my night. It was the fact that I was in a packed room with a bunch of people who also loved Bright Eyes. The audience gave as much respect to Bright Eyes as they did for the two opening bands. There was only one annoying girl at the concert who obviously confused Bright Eyes for some boppin' pop dance music. I thought that was pretty good compared to other concerts. I met a boy in line who was going to interview Conor. We really clicked and wound up spending the whole concert together. He asked if I'd interview Conor with him. But as you know I couldn't say one fucking word to him in the washroom...so I had to decline (that and Laura was bitchin' to leave).
Bright Eyes performed most of their songs from the new album and I think it was because they had so many musicians on tour...they really wouldn't have worked with the ballad type songs. My favourite song played was Lover I Don't Have to Love...where he sang, "Let's just keep fucking" instead of "Let's just keep touching" as is on the cd. Fucking just seems to suit the song more. I like to fuck. Do you? Conor seemed to like to fuck his guitar. And drink. And drink. And drink. But so do I. :)
Conor's trembling, emotion-filled voice was just as powerful as it is on any of his cds. He went on about how much he really liked Canada and wants to become a Candian citizen. I hope this means when he tours again Canada will be on the list. He said he'd come back in 4 months. I doubt it.
Some crazy Montrealer hit our car. Laura was quite distraught over this but I just saw Bright Eyes live, met an amazing guy and had a "one-way" conversation with Conor. I really didn't care...that and no damage was done.
